about

This song was inspired by the biography of the Carter Family called Will You Miss Me. There was also a PBS special based on the book with interviews of the some of the Children of A.P., Sarah, and Maybelle Carter that expanded on the story. Jim took away the essence of what one of the children said which was that A.P. and Sarah had to keep working together after they had split up and that the couple might have gotten back together, but A.P. was so hurt that he couldn’t find it in his heart to do so. Another interesting element is that the melody was inspired by a Monroe Brothers song. Jim changed some chords and the melody a bit and made it his own. He initially set out to write this songs as a challenge to his skill as a song writer and composer. The last section of the tune takes a turn toward a bit of a swing/jazz arrangement from our drummer Jon Arkin. He suggested we slow it down and swing it with some improve. During the session of the song John Cuniberti suggested another change which was to remove the slower drum solo and place one in the fast part of the tune.

lyrics

"Dime in My Pocket" Lyrics

A dime in my pocket, holes in both of my shoes
An achin' in my heart dear cause I'm not over you
Now you're gone and I'm alone
And I'll never take you back again
I used to dream dear about you all the time
Now I can't sleep at all with you on my mind
Cause you're gone and I'm alone
And I'll never take you back again
Maybe I'll walk to Arkansas, maybe Tennessee.
Anywhere away from here would be just fine for me
Cause you're gone and I'm alone
And I'll never take you back again
Hear that pretty little bird, singing that lonesome tune
It must be thinking about me and you
Cause you're gone and I'm alone
And I'll never take you back again
[Chorus]
Now that you're gone and I'm alone
And I'll never take you back again
