about

This medley is a tribute to David Grisman. Jim Kerwin has played with Grisman for over 33 years, during his tenure with David he also work with and became friends with Jerry Garcia, to which you can her him on many of their recordings. JK also played in another Grisman band that was a off-shoot of the original bluegrass band Old and In The Way called Old and In The Gray. The song Old and In The Way became the name of the band which included Grisman, Garcia, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn.
Jim Nunally has played with Grisman for over 16 years in his bluegrass band the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience. He sang Old and In The Way at most of the live shows and also recorded it on the first DGBX CD.
Both Nunally and Kerwin admire David’s music and musicianship and wanted to pay tribute to him. Nunally came up with the idea of combining two of Grisman’s signature show pieces Old and In The Way and EMD, which was the theme song for the first Ron Howard move called Eat My Dust. Since Nell has just recently begun playing her flute regularly in performances Jim kept nudging her to learn EMD, he wrote David and asked him if he had the sheet music, he emailed back a copy. She learned it and nails it on this recording.

lyrics

"Old and In The Way / EMD" Lyrics

Old and in the way, that's what I heard them say
They used to heed the words he said, but that was yesterday
Gold will turn to gray and youth will fade away
They'll never care about you, call you old and in the way

Once I hear tell, he was happy
He had his share of friends and good times
Now, those friends have all passed on
He don't have a place called home
Looking back to a better day, feeling old and in the way

Old and in the way, that's what I heard them say
They used to heed the words he said, but that was yesterday
Gold will turn to gray and youth will fade away
They'll never care about you, call you old and in the way

When just a boy, he left his home
Thought he'd have the world on a string
Now the years have come and gone
Through the streets he walks alone
Like the old dog gone astray, he's just old and in the way
Old and in the way, that's what I heard them say
They used to heed the words he said, but that was yesterday
Gold will turn to gray and youth will fade away
They'll never care about you, call you old and in the way
