about

On a couple of occasions, Jim and I would start dinner, boiling a big pot of water for pasta seemed perfect for this, then we would go into different rooms and write songs and then come back together when the water had boiled and review what we’d written over dinner. This song came from one of those sessions. I believe Jim started the idea with the first few lines about how Life feels like Speed Limit Signs… 0 to 10 It’s Children at Play etc. We brainstormed the rest together. This song strikes chord with us for a lot of reasons. First, we do a lot of driving and in boring stretches entertain ourselves reading signs. But the way that time speeds up as you grow older, this is something that is really hitting us now. And we are aware of getting older. Our attitude is we FEEL young and we feel great. We know 3 good friends who are 85; one of them still gigs and tours and is an indomitable vital person (Ramblin’ Jack Elliott); another just gave up trapeze recently and is writing two books at the same time right now (writer Sam Keen); and another just took the city of New York to court for replenishing their cabs without consideration for the needs of disabled folks (and WON), he founded Disability Rights Advocates (Sid Wolinsky). We have other great people in our life who are ageing with vitality and are tremendous people. So we really liked combining the imagery of getting older and going faster and loving every minute of it. - Nell Robinson

"Speed Limit" Lyrics

Life feels like Speed Limit signs
Tryin’ hard to heed them
You can’t see what’s round the bend
Ain’t no U-Turns my friends
Slow to 10 we’re Children at Play
Then at 15 it’s the Hazardous Way
20 to 25 Rev it up, let it go
30 to 35 Merge, and Take it Slow
Life feels like Speed Limit signs
Tryin’ hard to heed them
You can’t see what’s round the bend
Ain’t no U-Turns my friends
40 to 45 Construction Ahead
50 to 55 Pass on the Left
60 to 65 Can be a Steep Grade
70-75 We’re going the Right Way
Life feels like Speed Limit signs
Tryin’ hard to heed them
You can’t see what’s round the bend
Ain’t no U-Turns my friends
80 to 85 you gotta Pass with Care
But roll down your window, breathe in the air
The scenes of Life are flying by
Just a blur in the window at 95
Life feels like Speed Limit signs
Tryin’ hard to heed them
You can’t see what’s round the bend
Ain’t no U-Turns my friends
You can’t see what’s round the bend
Ain’t no U-Turns my friends
